About Portsmouth: the harbour, Southsea and everyday city life

Find your bearings between Portsmouth’s historic waterfront, Southsea streets and the neighbourhoods on and beyond Portsea Island.

A city with water on several sides

Much of Portsmouth sits on Portsea Island, with the harbour to the west and the Solent along the southern shore. The city also extends onto the mainland. Cosham and Paulsgrove are part of Portsmouth’s everyday life, not distant places to ignore once you have seen the waterfront.

The naval connection is easy to recognise around the Historic Dockyard, but a useful local guide also needs room for shops, trades, schools and community organisations. This directory helps you find those everyday connections alongside places you might visit for an afternoon.

The Hard, Old Portsmouth and Southsea

The Hard is a useful starting point for the Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays. Continue towards Old Portsmouth for a different waterfront around the Camber and the harbour entrance, then towards Southsea Common and the seafront.

The Millennium Promenade links these parts of the city, with a marked route and an official guide. You can choose a shorter section rather than treating the whole walk as compulsory. Weather, events and works can affect the route, so use current signs and visitor information.

Different streets, different reasons to visit

Albert Road, Castle Road and the streets around Palmerston Road give Southsea several centres of their own. Independent shops, food businesses and creative spaces make these useful places to explore beyond a single seafront attraction.

Fratton, North End, Copnor and Cosham serve local routines in a different way. Check the area and actual address on a listing, especially when choosing an appointment or collecting an order. A broad Portsmouth label does not tell you how close a business is to home.

Plan around the destination

Choose your station and onward journey for the place you want to reach. Portsmouth Harbour is convenient for The Hard, while Portsmouth & Southsea serves the city centre; the latter’s name does not mean you step directly onto Southsea beach.

Portsmouth City Council is the unitary authority for the city. Gosport and Havant have separate councils, even where businesses work across the wider area. Use your postcode for public services and confirm a provider’s actual coverage before booking.
